Understanding Pain, and Turning Down the Pain Volume

About this event

Come learn from Phil Kanagy, spouse of Valley Village member Janine, about his recent 5-year journey with chronic pain, and a story of discovery that has resulted in significantly reduced levels of pain for him. He says: "I am not a physician . . . if my story can be helpful for others, I am happy to share."

Guests are always welcome, so feel free to bring friends and neighbors. And come early for conversation over a cup of tea!

Phil adds: "Chronic pain is not purely a physical, or biomedical, problem, like tissue damage or systems dysfunction. As social beings, we are also impacted by thoughts, beliefs, meaning we assign to pain, emotions, family, friends, environmental, and cultural factors. All these domains are intertwined and influence the pain we experience. Further, our brains and bodies are inextricably interconnected. Pain treatments that focus only on biomedical solutions, such as medications and surgeries (especially for chronic pain), miss the totality of our being and fail to consider all these other dimensions as part of a treatment plan for pain. Pain management is not all up to biomedical experts, leaving patients as passive recipients to their treatment; understanding and treating pain holistically requires active participation by those experiencing pain. We can often do something positive to reduce our own pain."

Come early (any time after 2:45) for conversation and tea before the meeting starts.
