Mary's Rock Hike, also observing the hawk migration - Register Sept 15
About this event
This hike begins at the Meadow Springs Parking Lot along the Skyline Drive a few miles south of the Thorton Gap entrance station. We should arrive at the parking lot around 8:45 am.
The hike begins across the road from the parking lot and climbs to the Application Trail (AT) over the next half mile. There is about 700 feet of climb up to the AT. There are a few steep parts with rocks and logs as steps. We will have a slow pace on the steep parts of the hike.
We head north on the AT to Marys Rock. The AT is along the ridge and gently climbs and descends.
We will enjoy the view, watch the hawks, and enjoy lunch or snacks at Marys Rock before returning via the same route.
Distance: About 3 miles total
Difficulty: Moderate with a few steep sections
Time: Estimated 3.5 hours of hiking, eating a lunch or snack, and bird watching and another 2 hours of travel time (1 hour each way).
Bring: Binoculars, water, snacks, lunch, hiking poles, and sun protection.
We will arrange car-pooling in the parking lot.
